c. Did you get your business license?

You are required to license your business with the city in which you operate. Check out the following link for general info, but you should contact your city for details. There’s an annual fee typically.

Is there a minimum amount of work/income before you have to license your business?

No, not typically…but it depends on the city rules for your business…usually – if you are operating a business at any level you need to register…the licensing fee might be less depending on the city you are in…the fees vary depending on the city and service being offered. 🙂

The business you register is done so in the city you live in even though you don’t have an office? Like I live in one city, work as an independent contractor in another. Don’t have a real office though I work from home occasionally. No need for an official office space for your business to operate out of?

It depends on each city…technically you should probably have one for each city you expect to do work in if you are not home based…but check the website of each city you anticipate and make sure. For example, I just checked National City and even don’t have an address there but are serving customers, they want you to obtain a business license. Depends on your business and city.

National City wants you to obtain a business license even though you only have a few customers there? Did you get one?

Do you need one where a project is located or where the client/investor lives?

  5. abcpa Says:

It’s where YOU are offering services…so if you work from home, then it’s not an issue…but if you are working in National City, then you need to get licensed to do business there (technically).

I don’t have a national city business license (only San Diego city)…but I don’t do any work at client locations…I do all work from home except for certain San Diego city locations. (offering my services from San Diego city)…it will be based on where you perform your work.

Is there a business license that covers more of an area so that you don’t have to get multiple licenses? How about if you travel to the job location to do field work, but most of your work is done at home which is in another city do you have to get more than one?
